Kool-aid Dip Dye

I finally did it. I dip dyed my hair with koolaid!I just had to do something rebellious in my teenage years. I was going for a purple color, but it ended up pink. Oh well!I still love it!I'll upload pictures later. But here is some inspiration and tips(punny!) on how to get the koolaid down. I'm so happy with the way it turned out that I can't wait for the color to wash off so I could try blue, and then purple, and the maroon:).

Here's what I did.I know there's a million ways to do it,but this is what worked.
  • I took 2 packets of grape and 2 packets of tropical punch(its in a blue packet,so I thought it'd be blue, but its red!) and poured it in a cup. Make sure its a cup you don't mind getting stained!***Make sure that the mixes you use are unsweetened!
  • I mixed in a quarter size drop of conditioner and about a spoonful of water. Just make sure it creates a paste like texture when you mix it.
  • To predict how the color would turn out, I let the sink run on the spoon I mixed it with. It appeared to be a magenta-ish redish color.I was okay with it so I went on with it.
  • I seperated my hair into about 12 pieces and rubbed the paste onto my tips. I wrapped them in aluminum foil and let them stay for about 3 hours.
  • Since I was scared it wouldn't work,I combined another method I saw of dyeing. I put a 1/2 cup of water in the microwave for 2.5 minutes. Then I dipped my my right tips in the cup for about 6 or 7 minutes. You could leave it in for longer if you need.
  • Reheat the cup and put your left side of tips in.
  • Dry your tips with a paper towel and you are done!I'm not sure if you need to wash it out right away, but that's what I did. And the hair color remained nice and bright.
  • I'm sure that if you want to get it done fast, you don't have to do the 3 hour aluminum foil thing and you can just dip it in the boiling water for about 10 minutes.

  3. So the dipping your hair in the cup for like 6 minutes really worked? How long will it last? Like for a week or for 3 days? And, what if you do something that will make you sweat, will it stain your clothes when you sweat? And for the dipping of hair in a cup, all you need to do is, boil the water and 3 packs of kool aid then dip your hair for 10 minutes and your all done?

    1. my hair still has red koolaid in it actually!its not as strong, but i'm tired of it now so I dyed my hair completely black. But yes, i think it works better than normal hair dye. It does not stain your clothes at all. In fact, it smells pretty yummy for a few days :) Just make sure you wash away the excess after you have dyed your hair, i think that's what prevents it from stains. Also, if you want the color to be more vibrant, bleach the tips of your hair. Even sun-in works i believe!

  6. A WAY THAT REALLY WORKS!!!!!
Ok so heres what i did ...
First i boiled water and put the kool aid in.
Then i left my hair in it till the water cooled.
Next instead of blow drying i went in the sun to let it air dry.
After it was done drying i left it in my hair over night before washing it out.
In the morning i rinsed with COLD water.
BAM your done !! i did this and it STAYED FOR 3 MONTHS!!!
Also if you want to really take good care of it, when you are shampooing rinse out the shampoo with cold water.
if you need to take it out sometimes toothpaste works but no promises on if it will come out my hair is brown and the color was really vibrant my friend who is blonde did it this way and she had to redye her hair for it to come out thats why i only recomend this process if you have darker hair and if your only dying the ends.
    hope this helped!

    4. It doesnt really turn out that bright it sort of blends with the brown. The best color to do is red just dip it in and out for about 4-5 minutes and turns out a bright red

  12. I also wanna try dyeing my hair with kool-aid, but if I use the boiling kool-ad method, how do u dye the full head? The back and sides?

    1. I suggest that you just use the boiling method on the tips. If you have light hair, then you could just leave in the koolaid conditioner mix throughout your entire head and it should do the trick just fine;)
